Healthy Post-Workout Snacks To Fuel Recovery

July 15, 2017

A few weeks ago we talked about the best pre-workout snacks that help give you the energy you need to push through your workout. Today, we’d like to talk about some post-workout snacks that will aid in recovery.

Guidelines For After-Exercise Snacks

One thing to keep in mind is to choose snacks that are healthy, high in protein, and satisfying. Protein will help to rebuild muscles that were torn down during your workout, and making sure that you eat something substantial will make you less likely to binge on snacks later.

Lean Protein and Toast

Choosing a lean protein such as tuna, turkey, or chicken breast will be plenty of protein to keep you fueled until your next meal. Additionally, it is believed that a combination of carbs and protein can have better recovery benefits than protein alone, so eating your protein on a slice of warm toast makes a satisfying and healthy snack.

Greek Yogurt and Fruit

Greek yogurt is a great source of protein without a lot of calories. Adding some vitamin C rich fruits such as oranges, papaya, strawberries, and even bell peppers will help to speed recovery and reduce muscle fatigue.

Frozen Waffle with Almond Butter

Sometimes we crave something sweet after our workout. We’ve all told ourselves that a Snickers bar is healthy because it has nuts, but we know that’s a lie. If you’ve got a sweet tooth after your workout, try reaching for a whole-grain frozen waffle with a tablespoon of almond butter or another nut butter of your choice (try to choose one without added sugar). For extra protein and flavor, add some fat-free Greek yogurt and a pinch of cinnamon.

Apples and Peanut Butter

This was a classic go-to snack from when we were kids, and if it could fuel us then, it can fuel us now! A tablespoon of nut butter and a crisp apple is under 150 calories, yet has plenty of protein plus some healthy carbs.

Trail Mix

Trail mix is a great workout recovery snack that doesn’t require any preparation. Throw your favorite trail mix in your gym back and eat it on the go. It has a great mix of proteins from nuts and granola and carbs from the raisins. Plus the salty-sweet combination can curb any cravings you have for an unhealthy treat without overdoing it on the chocolate – just make sure you don’t only eat the M&Ms!
