How Much Recovery Do You Need? Part 4

August 24, 2016

In our last blog, we said that an athlete who knows how to recover is unstoppable, and we meant it. When you recover, you aren’t taking a break from training. giving your body the time it needs to rebuild itself and come back stronger than before is training – no question! Recovery isn’t something you only do when you’ve been injured or run a marathon. It’s an integral part of everyday fitness. In our last blog, we discussed types of exercise and fast twitch muscles when it comes to recovery. Today, we have one last thing to consider and some advice on recovering like a champion.

The more you train, the more recovery you need

  • This one may seem obvious, but it’s amazing how many people miss it. Training cycles will often take you through an overtraining time, and that’s fine … if you know how to recover. Whether you’ve overtrained on purpose or not, your body needs the rest. A personal trainer will be able to give you important insights. If you work a job that requires physical labor, take that into account and give yourself extra rest time.

How can you get that recovery time?

  • Recovery consists of two things: sleep and food. Your muscles need to repair, and they can do that best when you’ve chilled out and aren’t trying to make them do anything. If you’re training right, you’ll be sleepier. It’s a good sign. Let yourself sleep!
  • Your muscles can’t rebuild themselves if they don’t have the proper building blocks. Give your body the nutrition it needs to recover, or your rest times will be ineffective and your workouts even worse.
