Fitness is Not a Destination it is a Way of Life
Why you need cardio
You’ve probably heard that you need to incorporate cardio into your routine, but you might not know exactly why. The American College of Sports Medicine guidelines suggests 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise 5 days a week, or vigorous cardio 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week. For weight loss, more activity is recommended, depending on your diet and other activities. But know that cardio boasts more benefits than just weight loss.
- It’s natural. Our bodies were made to move—not be sedentary. After you exercise, you feel energized, confident and top of the world. Conversely, when we don’t move our bodies feel sluggish and out of sorts.
- It enhances quality of life. Studies show that people who exercise live longer. And there’s something to be said for more energy and looser fitting clothes. Many who exercise regularly report reduced stress, anxiety and increased mental clarity.
- Doing cardio will keep the blood flowing. It can also ward off high blood pressure.
It should be mentioned cardio is a great complement to strength training and stretching. Don’t forget to mix it up so your body doesn’t get bored.
