Soda no more

January 23, 2015

If you’re a soda drinker, you probably already know the habit isn’t the best for you. But giving up a habit is not easy. Instead of going cold turkey, why not drink in these tips to transition to a soda-free lifestyle?

1. Ease into it. If you drink six cans a day, start by cutting back one each day for several weeks until soda is no longer part of your daily routine. Over time, you’ll miss those first few sodas less and less, and eventually you’ll be ready to cut out one or two more.

2. Find an alternative. If you find the carbonation refreshing, then you might want Set of refreshing soda drinks in metal cans Design and text labels of these drink cans is MY OWNto try sparkling water. If sweet is what you crave, then you might want to opt for fruit juice. The healthiest option would be to just drink enhanced water. Think cucumber slices, berries, citrus fruit or fresh mint to give it a zing.

3. Reserve it for a treat. You might allow yourself to enjoy a soda when you go out to dinner or the movies – but not at home. Maintain boundaries and you’re more likely to have success.

4. Rethink your routine. If you always have a soda on a break at work with a friend, find an alternate activity. Maybe you could go for a walk instead?

5. Make yourself accountable. People who are successful at making long-term lifestyle changes have strong support networks. Keep yourself accountable by telling people around you, and reap the benefits of having their support along the way.

As with any habit, you can’t expect changes overnight. Give yourself a break if you slip up. Remember, tomorrow is a new day! In time you’ll develop the willpower to resist it.
