Expecting? Don’t forget exercise!

February 26, 2015

young pregnant woman gentle healthy exerciseIf you’re expecting, that doesn’t have to mean the end of an exercise routine. In fact, moderate exercise during pregnancy is recommended and encouraged. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) says you can safely take part in 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise every day, as long as you don’t have a medical condition or complication.

No doubt about it, exercise is a plus for both you and your baby. Here are some of the known benefits:

  • Exercise can increase your sense of control and boost your energy level. It makes you feel better by releasing endorphins–hormones that make you feel happy. One study found that exercise boosts levels of serotonin, a brain chemical linked to mood, putting you in better spirits.
  • Appropriate exercise can relieve aches and pains, reduce constipation, and help you sleep better. When you’re carrying extra weight, finding a comfortable sleeping position can be a real challenge. But exercise will help you work off any excess energy and tire you enough to lull you into a deeper, more restful slumber. And who wouldn’t want that?
  • Ever heard of the pregnancy glow? Well, there’s something to that. Exercise can transform you on the outside as well, as it increases the blood flow to your skin, giving you a healthy glow.
  • Did you know exercise can help with preparing for birth? Strong muscles and a fit heart can greatly ease labor and delivery. Gaining control over your breathing can help you manage pain. And in the event of a lengthy labor, increased endurance can be a real help.
  • Weight gain is inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Continuing to exercise can help maintain a healthy weight gain and make you feel better during and after pregnancy.

The level of exercise recommended will depend, in part, on your level of pre-pregnancy fitness. Talk to your doctor if you have questions.
