At first glance that monthly fee can seem pretty steep, and the discount for a year long membership doesn’t seem worth it, if you are going to quit going. But is it really that much of a cost?

A study completed at George Washington University found that the individual cost of obesity for women is $4879/year and $2626/year for men. Yet the average gym membership costs $55/month, which figures to $660/year. So is it worth it to join that gym? Yes.

The health benefits we receive from exercise are too enormous to count. Obesity, and inactivity are leading causes of heart disease, chronic illness, and cancer. So while it may seem like joining a gym is more expensive than doing nothing, it’s actually saving you more than just money. It’s saving your life.

Many gyms offer incentive packages to keep you focused, or partial memberships. These are good alternatives if are unable to afford the full membership fee. Additionally signing up for regular classes instead of just joining a gym can keep you motivated, and act as a great way to meet others. Working out with friends is great way to stay motivated.

If you are really serious about getting fit, consider hiring a personal trainer. It can be expensive, but they are specifically trained to help you meet your goals. Ask for recommendations at your gym, or from friends who use a trainer. Observe your trainer in a session, to see if his/her style will be a good fit for you.

We know now that exercise and diet are two of the most important health factors. Your local gym can be a great resource to get you on track to incorporating fitness into your daily life. Try it today, and see how you can make a positive change!
