38931196_SDo you set big fitness goals only to loosen the reins on them as time passes? Maybe it’s time to take some smaller and more doable steps towards what you want to achieve. Little things really add up over time, so think about some of these ways you can become healthier and happier.

Make a schedule for getting to the gym. Whether it’s on your phone or on a big bulletin board in the kitchen, writing it down increases your chances of actually doing it. Besides, this might involve support from family to keep you on track. Just be sure to make your fitness schedule realistic. Even 2-3 times a week for 30-45 minute segments are better than nothing!

When you’re at the gym, keep it simple. You can increase your likelihood of sticking with a workout by choosing something you enjoy doing. If you find the treadmill monotonous, check out classes your gym offers. Even spending a short, but intense time on the stationary bike can burn lots of calories and make you feel great afterwards.

Outside of your gym time, be aware of another key component to sticking with a fitness routine: diet. No, not “diet” as in major changes to what you eat to lose weight. Rather “diet” as in making healthier choices with meals and snacks for more energy. Aren’t you more likely to work out when you actually feel good? Shoot for fresh fruits and vegetables dominating your shopping cart and plate. It also doesn’t hurt to reduce your portions at mealtime. There are lots of portion control guides out there to keep you from eating too many foods that will make you feel slow and lethargic.

There are tons of other little steps that can be taken for better health. Let these ideas be a guideline for you to meet your goals and live a healthier lifestyle. Keep it small and simple!
